the artist
Deana is a life-long creative whose fine art encompasses acrylics, photography, and pastels. Genres span abstract expressionism to impressionism and realism.
The mixed media art is perhaps better defined as “Extractionism” as the final painting is influenced by the content and look of the photograph as well as how the photo is modified and then extracted or expressed onto the canvas via painting.
The process begins with selection of an image from Deana’s library of photographs personally taken over a 25-plus year time frame. The photograph is prepared and printed on archival paper. The photo is then gessoed onto a canvas or other base material, and painting ensues. The painting portion of the art is influenced by the photo. The photography focuses on either the urban built environment, whether buildings, transport systems, and/or activity centers; or increasingly the natural environment. This focus is derived from Deana’s passion for cities and place; her background in architecture and urban design; and the serenity, beauty, and wonder found in the natural environment.
